Results of the Alabama Stunt Championships

On October 9th and 10th, Bob Dixon, David Shad and Mike Griffin traveled to Clanton, Alabama to represent the Georgia Aircraft Modelers Association and participate in the Alabama Control Line Stunt Championships. They were competing with other top notch control line flyers from all over the country. When all the dust settled and every flight was completed, the GAMA threesome did very well.

Bob Dixon took 2nd place in EXPERT STUNT and managed to do this even with engine problems during his second round flight.

David Shad took 2nd place in INTERMEDIATE STUNT and he also was plagued with engine problems so bad that he had to borrow an airplane he had never flown before from a friend and still finished in second place.

Mike Griffin took 1st place in BEGINNERS STUNT and this was his first ever contest to fly as a beginner.

These are the only three members in our club that fly competitively in Control Stunt around the country and without the support of the entire club and the wonderful facilities we have, these results would not have been possible.

I read Mike’s blog about the contest, but I wanted you to know that I went out to practice on our field last week prior to the contest and the field was in perfect condition. It’s scenery and trim was just beautiful. My Nobler took off and landed like it was on a golf fairway. The grass has taken hold and I couldn’t even tell there were any weed clumps. Having a field like this is a major contributor to anyone flying at the competitive level and Mike and Dave do also. It’s so nice not to worry about weeds grabbing your lines and putting grass marks all over your finish on the airplane. I wanted to personally thank you and the GAMA members that support our part of this hobby and the entire flying site. Although, there are only 3 of us actively using the field, we are still striving to foster more interest and bring more guys out. I will be inviting 2 of my competitors up to our field for a flying clinic since there are many who would give their left arm for a field like ours.

Let me know if there is anything I can do for all our efforts even on the R/C end. I am now starting to work on my new fleet and should be back at R/C soon.

Marietta Contest - Written by Mike Griffin

This past weekend, Bob Dixon, David Shad and Mike Griffin represented GAMA at the Marietta Control Line Contest held in Marietta, GA. Contestants come from all over the country for these contests and only the best of the best score in the top 3. Mike did not fly but manned his booth for his Custom Cut Kit line of his pre cut model plane kits.

Bob and Dave did compete and here are the results.

Bob Dixon took first place in two of the three events he entered - Classic and Nostalgia 30
Bob took third place in the Expert category against some of the top flyers in the world. The first place finisher is a pilot who will represent the United States in the world Championships overseas this coming summer.

Dave Shad was entered in one event - Intermediate - and took third place against some great flyers in that category too. Dave put on a great performance against some great pilots.
I sat in the shade and sold kits for this one but will be entering the contest along with Bob and Dave in Clanton, Alabama this coming October.

Congratulations to Bob and Dave for representing our club in outstanding fashion. Having the circle at our field has proven to be an invaluable resource for practice to achieve such high marks in the Control Line aspect of our club. The circle looks absolutely beautiful and all the ground work we did three years ago with seeding and fertilizing has really paid off in more ways than one.

Thanks to everyone in the club for their support to the small control line group that we have but hope to grow in the future.

Turbine Powered Delta - Keith Lindsay

Most of you have seen the large .91 powered delta I fly. I took it a step further and made one a turbine powered canard configured jet. The pictures show the sequence, sort of, as it was being built. The fuselage is about eight pounds empty, so should be about sixteen pounds ready to fly. The turbine is rated at fourteen pounds....should have adequate thrust for vertical performance. The canard is one third the size of the wing with the same sweep back angle. The canard elevator should enhance the elevons and provide high AOA landings...that's the plan. The CG was moved up four inches because of the canard. Two 24oz. Tanks are imbedded in the wing. A 4 oz. Hopper tankis located in the fuselage. The wing is sheeted with 3/32 balsa. A second spar was added for strength. A fun project that was easy to do.

Many of you know the Flying King designed by Bruce Tharpe. The model has been around a while and has been adapted to many different schemes. I thought it would be a great platform for a four engined model.

The engine of choice ( because I happened to have four of them) is the four cycle OS20. Actually two of them are .26s and two are .20s. The total thrust from the four engines should be about right for the airframe.

The nacelle spacing was determined by the size prop being used. The wing center section is flat so no dihedral problems to worry about. The size of the nacelle was determined by the fuel tank, throttle servo, and engine. Once that was settled, the nacelles went together quickly.

The fuselage nose was changed and the wing hold down plate and dowels were fortified because of the increased weight of the wing. Other than that the kit was built per directions. Because the model is being built in Germany I'll have to wait a couple of years before it can be mailed to Georgia. I highly recommend the Flying King, a very nice kit that flies like a dream and is an easy build!!

I made this one for me. Will have a Brodak 25 or Blue OS 25 LA...Dont know which yet. Wing is Ultracote Pearl yellow and the fuselage is painted with Rustoleum. I made this one from scratch and it has a built up hollow reinforced leading edge. Dont have a scale but she is light.

Just thought I’d share my latest project. I’ve taken a break from the building the P-40 (that kit will be the death of me yet) and set it aside to work on something simpler.

This was a KADET LT 40 kit that I’ve bashed into a twin. My first twin in fact….YIKES!

Power will be two .40LA 2 strokes. These engines are not the strongest but they are very smooth and sip fuel. Should be a great match for this airframe.

Besides the Nacelles being added I’ve just extended the nose to something a little more appealing. I’m trying to leave this as stock as possible because of the great flying characteristics the KADET already has. The only other changes that will be made might be the addition of flaps.

We need your help at the Southeastern Model Show. The show will be held on 6-7 March 2009 at the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter in Perry, Georgia. We need your help as ambassadors for GAMA, ticket sellers, event help, and many others areas of help needed.

This show is our primary fund raiser for the year. This fundraiser is extremely important to GAMA to pay for the many benefits you have as a member of our association. Dues only cannot fund the budget. Please let your club officers know that you can help run the show in March.

Our 26 April picnic and meeting was great with a good turnout. The monthly membership drawing wasn't won so it rolls over to the next meeting on 31 May for $200.00. Historic Change to GAMA Constitution

Effective 1 June 2008 GAMA will no longer require an initiation fee as a requirement for membership in GAMA. Members voted on and approved this historic change at a meeting held at the field on 29 March 2008. No refunds will be granted to those members previously paying this fee.

The constitution has been updated to reflect this change which can be seen on our web site. Click here to go to the GAMA constitution web page.

Our constitution has also been changed to reflect our financial year to calander year reporting, 1 January - 31 December. All treasurer reports effective immediately will reflect calander year reporting.

Members are encourged to read the constitution in its entirety to check for any errors or procedures that may be outdated.

Lesson Learned - Written By Mike Griffin

When Tom McClain first contacted me about writing this article relating to a near disaster I just experienced, I asked him how should I format it for the readers and he sent me a recent column written by Leonard Neumann pertaining to safety and very similar in nature to what just happened to me, However as I read further into Leonard’s article is was almost Deja Vu for me because of my past experience. Please allow me to digress here for just a moment as it does pertain to what the subject here is. Years ago I flew with the Civil Air Patrol in Tampa and took flying lessons there also. I remember in ground school, the instructor talked about how pilots over time became complacent with routine checklists after spending hundreds of hours in the cockpit and how most human errors were committed not by new pilots, but by pilots who had hundreds or even thousands of hours flying time. My own CFI even told me of a landing he once made in a twin engine plane and when he heard the prop tips hitting the runway, he remembered he had not lowered the gear. He of course knew better but in an instant (some of us over 60 might call it a senior moment) something routine became something forgotten and disaster might have followed.

Leonard’s main point in his article was how to fly safely alone when using a stooge and using well made and failsafe designed stooges. When my incident occurred there were other people around me and I had someone launching me so I was lucky in that respect. But what if they hadn’t been there and I was alone, what would have happened? The stooge I use is one that I got from Tom Morris and it weighs so much I don’t think a Piper Cub would pull it. It is a slab of steel with aggregate on one side to keep it from sliding if you are flying on asphalt although our field is grass. I always attach the stooge to the plane itself and not the tail wheel so I really don’t worry as much about stooge failure as I do getting injured and trying to get out of there by myself. If I had been alone when I stuck my thumb into an 11 x 4 APC prop a little over a week ago, I probably could have wrapped my hand and driven out to civilization and gotten to the hospital. I said probably, but thinking back on the pain, the tears blurring my vision, my blood pressure going through the roof and worrying about losing my thumb, I could have very well wrecked my vehicle injuring myself further or even worse, hurting someone else.

As I sat down to write this and explain what caused this very painful incident, I searched my brain for a reason and probed my mind for what I did wrong that caused this to happen. I can now tell you without a doubt, I still don’t know how this happened.

The following is an account in pictures and words of what actually happened to me on March 6, 2008. Keep in mind I did have somebody launching me and holding the rear of the plane although this re creation does not show that.

I used my electric starter to start the plane. I quit back flipping and hand starting a long time ago after getting “bit” and bruised so many times.

After the OS 46 LA started, I needed to adjust the needle valve, so like I have done so many times before, I walked around behind the prop as the next picture shows.

I adjusted the needle valve and then reached down with my right hand to release the glow starter as shown in the next two pictures.

For a split second I lost concentration and put my left thumb into the spinning prop. The following pictures show the wound right before the stitches were taken out, and the x ray showing where the prop cut the bone. This was classified as an open fracture since the bone was also damaged.

Look closely and you can see the bone cut in the thumb.

This was the result after spending 6 hours in the emergency room. It took 2 hours to get me out of the waiting room and another 4 hours to get the doctor in to suture it and then discharge me. The ER doc asked me if I had gotten my thumb caught in a chain saw if was mangled so badly. We didn’t take any pictures of it before it was sewn up due to the nausea factor on my part. The orthopedic doctor who put the cast on said I was very lucky to still have my thumb. I will not know for some time how much use I will have of it.

If there is any lesson to be learned here it is once that engine is on, take nothing for granted. Even though you have done this hundreds of times, act like it is the first and have a great respect for something throwing around an equivalent of a #11 exacto blade at thousands of RPMs. I will also paint my prop tips as soon as my hand allows.

Ours is a wonderful sport and hobby and since a whole lot of us are not spring chickens anymore, we have to make it a point to remember where our body parts are at any given time in relation to our decreasing reflex time and increasing senior moments. I have no idea what that last sentence meant but it sounded good…….didn’t it.

Charlie Hayes - Life Member

Charlie Hayes was awarded Life Member Status by GAMA members at a meeting held at the flying field on 23 February for dedicated service to GAMA.

Charlie tirelessly has taken on the job of keeping our fuel inventory replenished over the past several years. He makes those long trips to Hodges Hobbies, picks up the fuel and delivers it to the field house. Our members depend on club fuel to be available year round.

Charlie is always eager to help flyers that are having trouble with hard starting engines and help with minor repairs and is a frequent flyer most week ends year round . He is a dedicated modeler and probably enjoys flying Radio Control Aircraft above anything else.

Charlie was presented a plaque from the club to record his new membership status.

The Forerunner - By Mike Griffin

This is a design called The Forerunner and was originally designed to use a foam wing. I did not want to use a foam wing so I decided to build the plane from scratch using the following modifications. I had someone laser cut a set of ribs for me using only to root and tip ribs as a template. I made the wing 2 1/2" thick which was considerably thicker than the original foam wing. The fusalage I cut as originally designed but I did increase the size of the tail feathers. I covered the wing with Polyspan and the fuselage, stab and rudder are covered with silkspan. There is a total of 8 coats of nitrate dope and thinner on the wing and almost that many on the rest of the plane. The final undercoat was a light coat of Rustoleum grey auto primer which I lightly sanded with 320 grit sandpaper. The color is Rutoleum enamel and the final coat is Rustoleum Crystal Clear enamel which gives it a high shine. From start to finish it took 6 months to build and finish this plane. Many thanks are due to Dave Shad who spent many hours in my gargage helping me out with this project.
